I am supporting the £20 million application by the City of Lincoln Council to the Conservative Government for a road bridge from the Western Growth Corridor spine road to Tritton Road.
While I opposed the Western Growth Corridor (Swanpool Development), now that this planning application has been approved, I want to see as much done as possible to mitigate against the traffic congestion and will work to support plans to do so. They must though, benefit all road users and help ease congestion throughout the City.
Putting Lincoln First!
Since the approval, many residents have contacted me and asked what I plan to do now. These questions are often specifically aimed at what I will do to mitigate against the impact that this development will have on traffic congestion in and around it.
As the Member of Parliament who always takes his responsibility very seriously in Putting Lincoln First, now the decision is made, I will be playing my full part to mitigate the impact of this development as much as possible, including supporting much-needed new transport infrastructure.
I have long campaigned for better transport infrastructure in Lincoln and have successfully ensured many developments have been delivered. To name just a few, these include the Eastern bypass, the link road from the High Street to Pelham Bridge and additional capacity at the Riseholme Roundabout.
On that basis, it is only right that I am working with the City Council, the County Council, the Department for Transport and the Department for Levelling Up to put together a bid to secure the £20million which is necessary to design and build a crucial railway bridge. This will connect the new Western Growth Corridor spine road to Tritton Road. This is from the Conservative Government’s Levelling Up fund.
Spine road and bridge will benefit all road users.
Further, and most importantly, I’ve successfully argued with the planners at the Council to scrap their plans for bus-only sections of this road and the bridge. It is vital that all forms of traffic are allowed to benefit and this is, and will always be, a clear condition that I place on my support.
This much-needed bridge and spine-road will also help deal with the existing traffic congestion on Skellingthorpe Road and Doddington Road too, creating a win-win situation for everyone.
This is because it will clearly provide a significant improvement for those who live locally in trying to get in and out of, or across, the city on a daily basis. I have been clear that this new infrastructure must benefit existing residents in Birchwood and Hartsholme who currently struggle with the congestion on Skellingthorpe Road and elsewhere. The new residents who will move into the Western Growth Corridor over the coming years will of course benefit too.
Conservative Government Levelling Up Lincoln
The Government’s Levelling Up agenda is all about improving our City’s facilities and infrastructure, and help Lincoln achieve the ambitious aspirations we all have for our City. Therefore, I am pleased to support this bid to the Government, of which I am a part, and will do all I can to secure such benefits and improvements for all my constituents.
As ever, I am fully focused on our much-loved City continuing to be the best place in Britain to live, work, study and visit. I know the Conservative Government supports this too, given the huge investment they already have made into Lincoln over the past 12 years.
Make your voice heard
The process for the Levelling Up fund is a competitive process with councils across the UK bidding for similar schemes. The Government will only approve a limited number of schemes.
