Lincoln’s MP, Karl McCartney, has welcomed the range of proposed new laws put forward by the Conservative Government in today’s Queen’s Speech. They will support the growth of the economy in Lincoln and further support law and order.
He is particularly pleased with the new laws on:
- Levelling up and Regeneration to give local councils new planning powers, including forcing landlords to let out empty shops to rejuvenate high streets. This will be crucial in ensuring Lincoln’s City Centre and local shopping areas remain vibrant and welcoming;
- Public Order to give new powers to the police over disruptive protests like those who glue themselves to motorways or tie themselves to petrol pumps. These types of protests have the sole intent of deliberately harming and disrupting the lives and livelihoods of people and businesses;
- Protecting free speech including at the City’s two universities, and,
- Creating a new state-run agency to regulate railway services across the UK, Great British Railways, which will ensure there is more accountability and help support continuing growth in the services in and out of Lincoln.
These new laws alongside the others announced today will build on the great foundations that the Conservative Government has already put in place to help Lincoln continue to be the most loved place in Britain to live, work, study and visit. This recently includes:
- 200 police officers being recruited for Lincolnshire since September 2019;
- £2.8 million in extra funding to 'Level Up’ Lincoln including more investment in adult education, training and the City’s high streets, and,
- Further progress on the completion of the North Hykeham Relief Road (“Southern Bypass”) which will boost the area’s economy, reduce the City’s congestion and complete the improvements the Eastern Bypass has brought.
Following the Queen’s Speech today, Lincoln’s MP, Karl McCartney, said: “The Conservative Government and I are always on the side of the law-abiding majority and the need to continue to drive the economy forward. This means we can keep more people safe, have more and better jobs, and, do all we can to address the cost of living.
“The new laws alongside the recently announced cuts in petrol duty and national insurance and the successful County-wide recruitment of an extra 200 police officers are clear proof of this commitment.
“Lincoln is the most loved place in Britain to live, work, study and visit. As these new laws and other recent announcements show, only the Conservatives support everyone in the City and will help us all move forward together.”
