The City of Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, Karl McCartney JP MP, has welcomed the news that Lincoln Cathedral has received £11.4 million of lottery funding to create a new visitor centre.
The existing Deanery will be converted into a Visitors’ Centre, cafe, shop and Exhibition Centre under the £16 million Lincoln Cathedral Connected project.
The Dean’s Garden will also be opened up to the public for the first time.
Karl McCartney JP MP, Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, said: “As the City of Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, I had absolutely no hesitation in giving my wholehearted support to Lincoln Cathedral Connected when the then Acting Dean, The Revd Canon John Patrick, approached me to formally support this project last year.
“The £11.4m of support for our beautiful and historic Cathedral will provide new state of the art facilities for residents in, and visitors to, our City and County. In doing so, it will create a number of new jobs and volunteering opportunities, provide training for Cathedral staff and volunteers. It will also secure the future of our internationally renowned and historic Cathedral as it approaches its 1000thyear.
“I would like to thank the Chairman of the Historic Lincoln Trust, Lord Cormack DL FSA, and the leadership of our Cathedral, as well as everyone else who assisted, for all their efforts in securing this important funding, and also of course those at the Heritage Lottery Fund in the East Midlands who have once again placed their faith in Lincoln.
“Our Cathedral is one of Lincolnshire’s greatest treasures and it is pivotal to Lincoln’s aim to become a top tourist destination in both the County, Country and the World. Today’s news puts our Cathedral well on the way to being that.”
