Yesterday, Karl McCartney MP, the City of Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, welcomed the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP. During his visit Mr Grayling offered his clear support for Karl’s re-election campaign.
The Secretary of State for Justice also visited HMP Lincoln to meet with the Prison Governor and Prison Staff, as well as Liberty Personnel, a company that specialises in supporting ex-offenders back into employment. Mr. Grayling also came to see the improvements made at the Prison following previous critical reports and problems including the 2002 riot.
Karl McCartney MP said: “I am grateful to the Lord Chancellor for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come to Lincoln and meet our hard working prison staff and management.
“I took the opportunity to once again thank Mr Grayling and his Conservative Ministers at the Ministry of Justice for taking the decision to keep HMP Lincoln open after the campaign that I and local media, including the Lincolnshire Echo, launched back in 2012.
“As the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice appreciates, Lincoln Prison is critical to our ability to keep communities safe by reducing and preventing recidivism once detainees - a large number of whom are from Lincolnshire - are released in the County. The Prison also employs over 500 people and generates nearly £11 million for the County’s economy.”
“I am pleased that Mr Grayling was able to see for himself what a great asset Lincoln Prison is to all of us in Lincoln and Lincolnshire.”
