The Member of Parliament for the City of Lincoln, Karl McCartney JP MP, has joined fellow Conservative politicians, activists and supporters at this year’s Conservative Party Conference, which is being held in Birmingham.
The Conference began yesterday (Sunday, 2 October) with The Rt Hon Theresa May MP addressing the Party Faithful for the first time as their Leader and the Country’s Prime Minister. In her first announcement to Conference Mrs May pledged to bring forward legislation in the next Session of Parliament that, when enacted, will repeal the European Communities Act 1972 on the day the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. This ‘Great Repeal Bill’ will end the authority of EU law and return powers of legislation to the UK.
On Monday morning Karl took part in a Breakfast Meeting with various colleagues and shortly afterwards was interviewed on LBC Radio by Nick Ferrari where they discussed the timescales of our departure from the EU after invoking Article 50.
Later that day Karl attended and spoke at a Fringe Event with the Conservative think tank, Bright Blue, hosted in partnership with the Open University, entitled 'Social mobility and lifelong learning'. Karl took part in a discussion about how to ensure people are able to reskill and upskill throughout their lives, reversing the decline in the number of part-time higher education entrants, and the role of individuals, government and employers in supporting and funding lifelong learning.
Other speakers at the event included John Gill, (Editor, Times Higher Education), Peter Horrocks (Vice-Chancellor, The Open University), Sonia Sodha (Chief Leader Writer, The Observer) and Josh Hardie (Deputy Director General, CBI).
Karl McCartney JP MP, Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, said: “I always enjoy catching up with friends and colleagues old and new at the Conservative Party Conference and, given the turn of events since the EU Referendum, this year’s Conference promises to be as busy and exciting as any other.
“The Prime Minister made an outstanding initial Conference speech as our new Leader yesterday and addressed many of the concerns of those of us who voted for the UK to Leave the European Union.
“I was delighted to hear Mrs May reassure the Country that we will take back control of our laws and provide the maximum possible certainty for workers and businesses on leaving the EU.
“I also particularly enjoyed my interview with LBC’s Nick Ferrari and the think tank, Bright Blue’s event on social mobility and lifelong learning as they are key issues for Mrs May and our Conservative Government.”
