Over the last few weeks, lots of Lincoln’s primary school children have been busy drawing snowmen, reindeers, carollers, angels, baby Jesus, mangers and all-things-Christmassy for Karl McCartney MP’s annual Christmas Card competition.
Back in November, Karl wrote to primary schools in Lincoln inviting the children to design the Christmas cards that he shall be sending to colleagues and many hundreds of individuals, businesses, charities and other organisations he has met and corresponded with in his capacity as the Member of Parliament for the City of Lincoln Constituency.
The Judging Panel – which consisted of Karl; Mel West, the Editor of the Lincolnshire Echo; Henry Ruddock of Ruddocks of Lincoln; and the Subdean, The Reverend Canon John Patrick – met to decide which of the children’s designs should be featured on Karl’s card.
Jessica Sunley in Year 3 at Lincoln Minster Preparatory School won the Christmas card competition.
The six runners up included:
- Maria Wierzelewska, Year 5, St Hugh’s Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy;
- Lyla Wilkinson, Reception Year, Hartsholme Academy;
- Poppy Watson, Age 4, Lincoln Minster Preparatory School;
- Emily Mitchell, Year 5, Birchwood Junior School;
- Mira Duarte, Year 6, St Hugh’s Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy;
- Mahelia Hulsman, Age 10, Lincoln Minster Preparatory School.
Karl McCartney MP, said: “This year, as in previous years, I received so many fantastic designs from primary schools around our City, which my fellow judges and I greatly enjoyed choosing between. The competition is always enjoyable, although, given the depth of artistic talent in Lincoln, choosing a winner is never easy.
“In the end we opted for Jessica Sunley’s beautiful and homely drawing of a Christmas tree to adorn the front of my Christmas card and the entries of Maria Wierzelewska, Lyla Wilkinson, Poppy Watson, Emily Mitchell, Mira Duarte and Mahelia Hulsman, as runners up, on the back.
“My continued thanks goes to both Ruddocks of Lincoln for sponsoring the competition, local media - particularly the Lincolnshire Echo - for all their help and support in publicising it, and also the Subdean, The Reverend Canon John Patrick, for taking the time to join Henry, Mel and I on the Judging Panel.”
