Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, Karl McCartney MP, has today welcomed the announcement by Sainsbury’s that it is piloting a new scheme in his Constituency to let customers recycle their Easter egg packaging in their stores.
The specially designed Easter recycling facility allows customers to recycle all elements of Easter egg packaging – including plastic, film, card, foil and ribbon, in the first such facility of its kind in the UK. The scheme is being trialled in 50 stores served by Sainsbury’s Basingstoke and Northampton depots, including the Lincoln store in Karl’s constituency, with a view to national rollout next year.
Recycling is an important part of Sainsbury’s environmental commitment and their 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan. Sainsbury’s already send zero waste to landfill, and are now working with their customers to help them find ways to recycle their packaging. All proceeds from the recycled material go to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
This initiative follows the success of Sainsbury’s Christmas card recycling scheme where they recycled 1.2million Christmas cards in store this year and raised over £9,000 for the FSC.
Karl McCartney MP said: “England alone generates some 177 million tonnes of waste every year, which is a poor use of resources, costs businesses and households money and causes environmental damage, so we need to do all we can to encourage people to recycle and to use resources efficiently.
“That’s why I support Sainsbury's Easter Egg Packaging Recycling Scheme and why I’m so pleased and grateful to the Supermarket Chain that it is being trialled at the store in my City of Lincoln Constituency.
“I want to see the UK move towards a ‘zero waste economy’. This doesn’t mean that no waste exists; it means a society where resources are fully valued, financially and environmentally. It means we reduce, reuse and recycle all we can, and throw things away only as a last resort.”
