Member of Parliament for Lincoln, Karl McCartney MP, has welcomed new figures showing the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance and Out-of-work Universal Credit in the constituency has more than halved since May 2010. The 1,650 fall represents a 50% decrease in unemployment since the last time Labour were in government. It is also the same month Karl was first elected to Parliament.
Already this year, it has been announced that Lincoln is one of the best cities in Britain to start a new business and Lincoln’s leading ice cream makers, Daisy Made has said they will be expanding by 49. There is still is significant new capital investment to come. This is on the back of a successful 2015 which saw new businesses being created alongside well known retailers coming to the City or expanding existing operations.
Across the UK as a whole past year, over 2.3 million more people are enjoying the security of a job than in 2010 and average wages are on the up – a 2% increase in the past year. This means working people across Lincoln are seeing their wages grow and our plan for a higher-employment and higher-wage economy is working.
Karl McCartney MP, said: “Today’s figures are excellent news for families and businesses in Lincoln, marking an important milestone in the road to full employment in the City. Lincoln is clearly the place to come to work, to set up a business and to invest.
“With employment at the highest rate in our history, wages continuing to grow above inflation, and the unemployment rate now below the level we last saw before Labour’s Great Recession, it’s clear our economic plan is working.”
