A call by a “Lincoln-based” criminal justice consultant and ex-prison governor that if he was in Government he would close HMP Lincoln because it was not fit for purpose has been condemned by Karl McCartney MP, Lincoln’s Member of Parliament. The consultant has previously campaigned for building large 3,000 inmate prisons to replace local prisons.
Karl McCartney MP, Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, said: “The case for keeping Lincoln prison open was accepted by the Government three years ago and nothing has changed since to suggest why this should change.
“It provides high quality rehabilitation to prisoners, it has a central location in the Lincolnshire side of the East Midlands which helps prisoners keep in touch with families, and I cannot stress enough its importance for local jobs and the economy.
“Given Lincoln Prison’s importance to the City and the County as a whole, it beggars belief that someone, who says they are Lincoln-based, and purports to be a serious commentator, wants to reopen this issue and call for our prison’s closure. I do not understand the motivation from a Non Executive Director of the Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, who happens to be a consultant, who has long pontificated on the need for ’super-prisons' and has form in this regard?”
