Karl McCartney JP, the Conservatives’ Parliamentary Candidate at the General Election, has today visited the Cancer Research UK Shop in Lincoln at 254 High Street to mark his support for the Charity’s ‘Cross Cancer Out’ campaign.
The visit follows the recent release of new statistics showing that an individual’s lifetime risk of cancer is rising, now 1 in 2 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. However, in the past forty years cancer survival rates have doubled so that now 2 in 4 people survive.
In 2013/14, Cancer Research UK’s shops contributed over £76 million to the £351 million the Charity spent on research to prevent, control and cure all cancers. Cancer Research UK receives no government funding for their research and their team of 40,000 volunteers play a vital role in not only raising funds, but also promoting the importance of fighting cancer in the community.
Karl McCartney JP, said: “I was delighted to meet with Roxy Squire and other shop staff and volunteers at Lincoln’s Cancer Research UK Shop and greatly enjoyed talking to them about their vital work. I also took the opportunity to assure Roxy and her colleagues of my support for Cancer Research UK’s 'Cross Cancer Out' Campaign.
“I know that early diagnosis of cancer is vital to give people the best chance of successful treatment. I am pleased that the Government is providing more than £450 million to help the NHS to diagnose cancer earlier. That money is part of more than £750 million in additional funding for cancer over four years.
“To ensure that people receive an early diagnosis, the Government is making sure they know the signs of cancer and when to speak to their GP. Since 2010-11, the Department of Health has undertaken a series of Be Clear on Cancer awareness campaigns covering bowel, bladder & kidney, breast and lung and other cancers. In addition to this, we are expanding screening programmes to support earlier diagnoses of asymptomatic cancer.
“People deserve the best cancer treatment which is why I also support the £1.16 billion Cancer Drugs Fund which has helped more than 60,000 cancer patients since it was set up to provide pioneering drugs to those who need them most. Back in the late 1990s I was part of a large fundraising effort in the City with the then Lord Mayor and took part in the John O'Groats to Land’s End bike ride raising money for the Cancer Research Campaign, so I have long supported this vital and inspirational charity. My family support the Lincoln Cancer Research Shop and the 560 around the Country staffed by over 17000 volunteers and generating £79m for the Charity.”
