The recent immigration figures which showed net migration to the country had reached 606,000 in just one year are of concern albeit there are exceptional circumstances in some cases such as those from Hong Kong and Ukraine.
I am confident that the Government’s recent plans on students will help, we need to look at hardening the rules further and also better train our own people for jobs, especially vocational jobs.
I also obviously want to stop the people traffickers from sending people across the Channel in boats and deal with illegal immigration more widely. In some ways, it shows how successful our country is that so many want to live and work here. However, our country is full enough already and we cannot keep building, else there will be no countryside left.
Labour, of course, has no plans that will work, in fact, they will make matters worse. Labour has always been weak on immigration and when they were last in power, there were barely any controls at all – it was a free for all.
