Football fan and Lincoln MP, Karl, has backed the Government’s new plans for protecting the long-term future of English football. He has worked closely with Lincoln City’s Chairman (Clive Nate) and Chief Executive (Liam Scully) over the past two years to make sure that the voice of the club and its fans were heard while the Conservative Government was considering its response to the Fan Led Review.
In particular, Karl and the club were very keen to ensure that a new independent regulator was created to help prevent the repeat of financial failings at some football clubs (Derby County, for instance). This has a knock-on effect on clubs like Lincoln City who are then trying to compete with clubs that are overspending.
Karl is also pleased with the further proposals such as fans being given greater say in the running of clubs including ensuring the heritage of clubs is protected such as team names and badges, and, any relocation plans. In addition, giving the power to clubs like Lincoln City to block other clubs in England from joining breakaway leagues like the European Super League is welcomed too.
These plans have been put forward in a Government White Paper announced today.
Karl, who always Puts Lincoln First, said: “I am pleased that the Conservative Government has listened to the voices of clubs like Lincoln City and its fans to make sure football is better regulated and its history and traditions are protected. We need to be clear that unscrupulous owners do not have any place in the Beautiful Game. The impact of financial mismanagement by others does have a real impact because it no longer is a level-playing field for clubs like ours to compete fairly.
“This is why I worked closely with the Chairman and Chief Executive of our club to make sure that the Government heard their views, not just for the interests of Lincoln City, but for all football clubs and fans.
“Football clubs are part of the identity and history of a community. In many respects, that is more important than the football actually played on the pitch. That must never be forgotten and must be protected at all costs.”
