Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, Karl McCartney MP, played in The Football Association’s annual Conservatives vs Lobby football match at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester on 4 October.
The match was also an opportunity for Karl to show his support for Breast Cancer Care – the only UK-wide specialist support charity and The FA’s official charity partner for 2014-16.
With help from Karl’s footballing skills, the Conservative MPs won the match 3-1. Karl then had the opportunity to find out more about The FA and Breast Cancer Care’s partnership which aims to help make the nation aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and to raise £500,000 to support people with the disease.
Funds raised through the official charity partnership will go towards a new mobile service, which will tour England to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
Karl McCartney MP said: “I always look forward to the traditional football game against the assorted skilled national and regional journalists who comprise the Press Lobby XI.
“It is always a great deal of fun and all in a good cause: namely, The FA’s charity partner, Breast Cancer Care.
“This year was especially enjoyable as not only did we win, but I scored one of the goals with a sublime strike from around 25 yards - it was Cantona-esque!
“It’s great The FA and Breast Cancer Care are working together to ensure everyone across the nation knows the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
“So many people are affected by breast cancer, so it’s vital that people feel confident in checking their breasts and know what to look out for.”
Samia al Qadhi, Chief Executive at Breast Cancer Care, said: “Every 10 minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer. We know that an earlier diagnosis of breast cancer can mean simpler and more effective treatment.
“So we’re delighted our partnership with The FA, is helping us to reach more men and the women they love, with this potentially life-saving information.
“It’s vital that women, and men, of all ages get to know their body by looking at and feeling their breast/chest area regularly. Then if they find any unusual changes to go and see their GP.”
