Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, Karl McCartney MP, has warmly welcomed today’s announcement by Virgin Trains East Coast of extra direct services between Lincoln and London.
Karl McCartney MP said: “I am delighted that Virgin Trains East Coast have listened to the numerous representations that I and various colleagues have made in our multitude of meetings both in Lincoln and Westminster and that they have agreed in principle a proposal to run special extra services to and from Lincoln on specific Saturdays from June to October, with special fares attached to these services.
“Clearly, this will greatly assist our efforts in Lincoln to bring visitors to the City of Lincoln to promote various tourist events and to support our local businesses.
“The announcement is particularly welcome during this the year of the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta. It follows Virgin Trains East Coast’s announcement towards the end of last year of an additional daily six trains from, and five trains to, London in 2019 with upgraded train interiors introduced between this year and 2017.
“We cannot underestimate the importance of rail links to Lincoln and Lincolnshire, especially the economic benefits that I believe would come from the improvements in regular direct rail connectivity between London to the City of Lincoln and County of Lincolnshire. I sincerely hope these extra services will prove to be the dynamo for even more and more regular services in the months and years to come. That’s why all of us in Lincoln, residents and businesses alike, and the Lincoln visitor business community in particular, need to work together to promote these extra services and ensure they are successful and sustainable in the long-term.”
