Karl McCartney MP is lending his support to a campaign to establish a Medical School in Lincolnshire.
The City of Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, along with six of Lincolnshire’s Members of Parliament, Medical Directors from all of the Health Trusts in Lincolnshire and three Consultant Representatives from the United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust’s hospitals, have written to the Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, urging him to discuss with the General Medical Council and Health Education England, the long term plan to establish a Medical School in the County.
The letter has also been signed by six Council Chief Executives, the Chairman of the Lincolnshire Health Scrutiny Committee, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, four Clinical Commissioning Group clinical leads, GP representatives, and the Medical Director of Healthwatch Lincolnshire.
Karl McCartney MP, said: “The providers and commissioners of healthcare in our County work very hard to improve the services which are provided to the patients of Lincolnshire. But one of the barriers to the continuing improvement in quality of services has been recruitment and retention of the medical workforce.
“There are currently significant gaps in both the general practice and hospital medical work-force, which leads to long waits for patients to access doctors, and increasing waiting times for investigations and treatments.
“One of the factors which has historically made recruitment of medical staff to Lincolnshire difficult has been the absence of a Medical School here. One of the consequences of this is that some doctors have chosen to work in other parts of the country rather than coming to Lincolnshire.
“It is, therefore, essential for the long term sustainability of health services in Lincolnshire, that a Medical School be established here and so I am extremely supportive of this excellent campaign.”
