On Monday, 8 June 2015, Karl McCartney MP, the Member of Parliament for the City of Lincoln, joined Princess Anne and the Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, Cllr Martin Hill OBE, as well as other guests and thousands of members of the public at the formal opening ceremony of the newly refurbished Lincoln Castle and the Magna Carta Centre.
The £22 million refurbishment was completed in anticipation of the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta and includes the Magna Carta Vault. This new addition comprises a large cinema that is located underground and illustrates the history of King John, the birth of the Great Charter and the Barons.
A 1215 copy of the Magna Carta can be found next to the 1217 Charter of the Forest at Lincoln Castle which is the only place in the world where the two documents can be seen side by side.
Karl McCartney MP said: “It was an honour to join The Princess Royal, so many of my constituents, and Cllr Martin Hill OBE at the formal opening of Lincoln Castle and the Magna Carta Centre.
“Lincoln Castle attracts people of all ages as there’s something to do here for young and old – that’s even truer now that people can walk right around the walls and view the impressive Magna Carta in its new Vault.
“This refurbishment and these new additions to our Castle will enhance Lincoln’s tourism offer, which, along with our other attractions such as The Museum of Lincolnshire Life, The Collection and The Usher Gallery, will increase tourism and stimulate our City and County’s economy.”
