Conservative-run Lincolnshire County Council have provided an update on the preliminary works on the North Hykeham Relief Road (Southern Bypass) that will soon be starting which will create a ring round for the first time around the City. The final piece of the jigsaw is due to be in place by 2028 with the completion of this road which will be a dual carriageway linking the A46 Pennells Roundabout to the Lincoln Eastern Bypass. This landmark project built by the County Council is being funded by the Conservative Government with the campaign having been led by Lincoln’s Conservative MP, Karl, despite being told it was “unachievable”.
Cllr Richard Davies, Executive Councillor for Highways and Transport at Lincolnshire County Council has stated that the preliminary works will result in temporary traffic signals at various locations. This includes Station Road, South Hykeham Road, Grantham Road and Somerton Gate Lane. People will also likely see a fair amount of activity along the route until the end of the year, including diggers and other machinery as needed for the investigations and surveys. A planning application will be submitted in 2023, with construction starting at the end of in 2025 and the road opening in late 2028. It will include the construction of new roundabouts and bridges.
Overall it will:
- Help grow the local economy
- Cut traffic in and around Lincoln, North Hykeham and the surrounding villages
- Connect the A46 between the Midlands and the Humber portForm part of Lincolnshire's coastal highway, making it easier for people from all over to get to the County’s coast.
Karl, Lincoln’s MP, who always Puts Lincoln First!, said: “ I am very pleased that the Conservative-run County Council is moving full steam ahead with the creation of this ring road. Inevitably, there will be some disruption but the long terms benefits are very clear for the City and the County as a whole. It will lead to more jobs, a cleaner environment and less congestion. This Conservative Government investment in our County’s infrastructure is another true sign of its commitment to improving the quality of life and opportunities for the area.
“I remember being told when I have first elected in 2010 that this road and the ‘ring road’ as a whole was ‘unachievable’ but everyone who knows me realises I do not easily give up. I have never stopped knocking on the doors of Ministers and officials to make sure they listened and that they delivered. Now we are moving closer to its completion all of the time which is excellent news.”
