Lincoln Member of Parliament, Karl McCartney MP, who since being elected in 2010 (and even before then) led the campaign to obtain Government funding for the Eastern Bypass has greatly welcomed their landmark decision to finally give the green light to the scheme. The need for an Eastern Bypass for Lincoln was first put forward over 90 years ago.
While the bypass will greatly benefit both the City and the whole County, Karl remains concerned that the road will not be big enough to cope with the likely volume of traffic and should be a dual, not single, carriageway. He also believes the Southern Relief Road is integral to the infrastructure of the City and County and he has raised these issues with the Government, Cabinet Members and their Ministerial colleagues, and will continue to do so.
Karl McCartney MP, Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, said: “After over 90 years of asking, I am delighted that this vital road link, benefitting the people and businesses of both the City and the whole County, will now finally become a reality. It is a landmark decision. Once built we will be asking ourselves why it had not happened earlier - and it was the first issue I continuously promoted on being elected in 2010.
“When I was first elected, I made the building of the Eastern Bypass one of my key promises to the people of Lincoln which I have now delivered - despite various tribulations. It also shows that when working in partnership and campaigning positively with business and the County Council, this Government will listen.
“I still remain concerned that the road will not be dualled and can again assure the people of Lincoln and Lincolnshire that I shall continue to do everything within my power to ensure this. Ultimately though any new road is better than no road and so, in the first instance, I am very happy to have at last heard the news that we have waited so long for and I look forward to the work starting.”
