Last Thursday, 6 November, Lincoln’s Member of Parliament, Karl McCartney MP, hosted an event in Churchill’s Restaurant & Coffee Bar in Lincoln High Street to thank the five charities who participated in the recent ‘Beating the Bounds’’ Charity Walk around the boundary of his City of Lincoln Constituency in one day. The event gave Karl an opportunity to present each of the charities with the balance of over £10,000 that this very successful Sponsored Walk raised.
The five local, Lincoln based charities who benefited from ‘Beating the Bounds’ are:
- St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice;
- Cooke/Connell – The Lincoln Tank Memorial;
- Motor Neurone Disease Association;
- One Me;
- YMCA Lincoln.
At 05:15 on the morning of Saturday, 20 September, Karl and the team of over 40 people supporting five good causes set off from the Horse and Jockey Pub in Waddington and completed the gruelling 30+ mile walk at 19:00 Saturday evening after 14 hours. The walk involved river crossings assisted by the Lincoln Sea Cadets and stops along the way to raise awareness of the five causes. Supported by LIVES and a support team made up of local Councillors and activists, the camaraderie on the day was wonderful as walkers encouraged each other along the way.
Karl McCartney MP said: “It was an honour to present such large cheques to the five Lincoln charities at Churchill’s last Thursday. I was only able to do so because of the support my ‘Beating the Bounds’ Charity Walk received from my fellow walkers, the support staff and, of course, local businesses, organisations and individuals who provided such generous sponsorship. In fact, with all donations, sponsorship and through justgiving.com, we raised over £10,000 in total for the five charities, an absolutely fantastic amount which dwarfs our original target of £2,500. Everyone can be very proud of their efforts, especially the number of walkers, including Sara-Jane Mills CEO of St Barnabas Hospice, Rebecca May and Joe Hicks from YMCA, Rob Jones from Bishop Grosseteste University, Yaroslov Pustarnokov from the University of Lincoln, Paul Edwick from Fairy Glam Ltd. and Mrs. McCartney, walking for MNDA, who along with me completed the entire route.
“It was a tough walk and all charity walks end with a hill. The final assent up Station Road in Waddington tested all of our resolve. It was a fantastic feeling when we finally completed our challenge and we were very grateful for the warm hospitably we received from The Horse and Jockey in Waddington.
“I have every intention of making this challenge an annual event and hope to announce next year’s charities and the date for ‘Beating the Bounds’’ early next year!”
